First thing’s first: Rabbits!
The field is overrun with them and suddenly I have sympathy for Mr McGregor. The poor man just wanted to enjoy his garden and grow some vegetables, and was constantly plagued by jacket-wearing rabbits.
So our first job had to be rabbit proofing the flower field. After researching the best way to do this, in went my order for lots of reels of chicken wire. Once we had it in place it was a simple matter of digging it in… except it wasn’t! We haven’t had rain for what feels like forever and the ground is currently about as diggable as concrete. So for now we wait.
We have been able to get on with some other jobs on the (very long) to do list. We’ve built a triple compost bin out of pallets, put up my polytunnel and covered it with a little help (and extra hands) from friends. We've marked out some of the flower beds, done lots of measuring and lots of planning. It is a little unsettling thinking about having a field full of flowers to keep watered next year in this weather which has helped focus our attention on the importance of harvesting as much water as we can as soon as we can.
Until it rains there isn’t much more we can do out on the field so for now it’s more planning and dreaming!
